Have you always wanted to create your own video game or learn how to code your very own website? Well, here’s your chance to learn! We just acquired an amazing new eResource that can teach you how to code! Fiero Code gives you everything you need to learn how to code in over 13 different coding languages, including JavaScript, Python, HTML, Code Blocks, SQL, CSS and more!
How Does it Work?
As soon as you log on, you will be welcomed to Fiero’s unique gamified interface. If you’ve already started a lesson or a project, it will show on the home screen so you can immediately jump right back in where you left off. If you’re not sure what to do next, you can always click the “Start here” button located below your current project. This will open up a dialogue box that will help you find something fun to do. In just a few short clicks, you’ll be coding a project or learning something new!
At the top left of the screen, you will find menu options to help you navigate Fiero.
Workouts:
Workouts are coding lessons. Some of the Workouts will be locked. These are more advanced lessons, and you need to complete the easier workouts first. In the advanced Workouts, you will build on what you learned previously, so it’s always best to start at the beginning. Coding is similar to learning a new language in this way. Workouts also have levels, and as you progress, the remaining levels will unlock, just like in a video game. Typically, Workouts are intended to take 1–2 hours, so the information is always approachable.
Workouts are one of the most exciting aspects of Fiero Code. When you start a Workout, your lesson will appear as a playable video, and below that, there is a blank field for your coding work. So you can code right alongside the Workout. Whenever I’m learning something new, I always learn better by doing it myself, and Fiero Code makes that so easy!
There’s a special Workout called the Careers track. This is unique because it isn’t a coding language lesson. Instead, the Careers track provides information on how you can take your coding skills to the next level and build a career. If you enjoy what you’re learning in Fiero Code, you can make a career out of it, and this special track will give you the information you need to get started on that path.
Missions:
Once you’ve had a chance to familiarize yourself with coding in the Workouts, you can jump over to Missions. Here, you will find various projects to test your coding knowledge. Missions are based on what you learn in the Workouts.
Create:
Have you worked through some coding Workouts and tried out some of the Missions on Fiero? Are you ready for a new challenge? Take your skills over to Create! Here, you will be able to work with any coding language available in Fiero. Start by selecting the language you want to work with, then you will see a blank coding space where you can code anything you can imagine!
Challenge:
Put your coding skills to the test with Challange! In this mode, you compete in live coding competitions with other people around the world for a chance to win real prizes. If you win, you will receive instructions to pick up your prize here at the library.
Gear:
If you’ve been following along in Fiero Code, you’ve probably noticed a robot avatar on some of the screens. Did you know that the avatar is customizable? As you progress through Workouts, Missions and Challenges, you’ll unlock body parts and gear for your robot avatar. Click on the Gear tab to start customizing your robot!
