One of the greatest delights of digital streaming services is the wide selection of independently produced or distributed films that would otherwise see limited releases. Filmmakers with fresh ideas for the medium now have platforms to share their unique stories and voices. The viewer’s ability to search titles by filmmakers, production companies and distributors can lead to a treasure trove of cinema.
For me, the treasure is Kanopy’s collection of A24 produced films, which span intense sci-fi thrillers, to spine-tingling horror, to Oscar-winning comedies and dramas. This discovery has been incredibly enriching, albeit a little daunting. There are currently 87 titles under the A24 banner on Kanopy.
Nothing can quite match the experience of seeing a favorite film for the first time. To be so immersed in a story that I find myself lost in the characters, the drama, unsure where the director is going to take me. To arrive at the film’s climax precariously rocking back and forth on the edge of my seat, only for the story to deliver a third act twist and a resolution that is both wild and well-earned.
This was my experience with Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina (Rated R), distributed by A24 and starring Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson and personal favorite Oscar Isaac. This gem easily sits in my top ten for the decade. It is a wonderful introduction to A24’s catalog with its smart storytelling and strong performances from the cast, not to mention some killer visual effects.
Other standout titles from A24 I’ve seen: Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (R), Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (R), Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy (R), and Sean Baker’s The Florida Project (R).
