In 1984, our library hosted a summer reading program titled, Fountaindale Corners: The Village That Reads! Children who met the reading requirements of the program attended a political rally, listened to campaign speeches sent to us by the nominated authors and cast their ballots using real voting machines.
Nominated authors sent in photographs, letters and beautiful illustrations that our staff saved for all these years. This collection includes letters and drawings from Bill Peet, Steven Kellogg, Jack Prelutsky, Donald Sobol and Newbery Medal winners Eleanor Estes, Betsy Byars and Cynthia Voigt. There are even three letters from winner Beverly Cleary, whose books are popular to this day!
In early 2019, our Children’s Services staff digitized these archives to share with or patrons and the world. Discover and enjoy this collection today!
