Reading Dragons & Friends is our year-round reading program for children in grades K–5. Take flight as you earn unique trading cards and battle your friends! The more you read, the more cards you earn.
If you have younger readers at home, please sign them up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.
Visit the Children’s Services Desk to sign up and pick up your first reading tracker. You will even receive a starter card of your choice at signup.
For every 30 minutes you read, you will earn one card, with the goal of earning an entire family of mythical creatures. Each family contains four cards. You will earn each family in sequential order: egg, baby, teen and adult. Once you’ve earned an entire family, you will move on to the next family. Bring your reading tracker to the Children’s Services Desk to pick up your cards.
We will release new creature family cards three times per year. You can also earn exclusive cards by attending special events and completing reading challenges throughout the year.
Family Reading Dragons Night
Thursday, November 7, 5–7 p.m. (Drop in)
Family Reading Night is taking to the skies! Attend a special storytime, complete crafts and nibble on snacks. All Family Reading Night attendees who register for Reading Dragons & Friends at or before the event will earn our exclusive Goldscale dragon card, while supplies last!
Battle your friends in a game of Dragon Duel! Shuffle and divide both player’s cards evenly. Place your stack of cards face down, and do not look at them. Both players draw the top card on their deck and flip it over at the same time.
Fire beats leaf.
Leaf beats water.
Water beats fire.
If you tie, the oldest creature wins. If your creatures are the same age, you go to war.
To go to war, add two cards face down to the pile, then flip one card face up. The winner adds all cards face down to the bottom of their stack. If you tie again, repeat the steps above until there is a winner.
Play until one person runs out of cards.
Reading Dragons & Friends was created by our friends at the Dover Public Library in Dover, OH.
