Green Initiatives

We’re a LEED Gold Certified building
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rigorous, technologically advanced and carefully monitored green building certification provided by the U.S. Green Building Council. To meet this certification, our building includes special features such as our green roof (which is long lasting, insulates the building more efficiently than a standard roof and helps prevent stormwater runoff). Other environmentally friendly features of the building include efficient water, lighting and heating and cooling systems.

Transportation
You can go by bike!  We offer a bicycle rack at the front entrance. If you’ve forgotten your bike lock, you can borrow one to use while you visit from the Information Desk located just inside our entrance.

If you drive a low emission or fuel efficient vehicle, feel free to park in one of the fuel efficient vehicle parking spaces close to the building.

In front of our building and just across the street are Pace Bus stops. Visit pacebus.com for bus route maps and schedules.

Recycling and Reuse
We’ve almost completely eliminated the use of plastic bags by providing patrons reusable cloth bags that are available for checkout just like a book or other library materials.

Cloth bags should be returned to a service desk or one of our free standing book drops located to the left of our entrance, on the north side of the library near the drive-thru window, at Ashbury’s or 1st Presbyterian Church of DuPage

We also offer an in-house recycling program.
Each floor of the library contains bins for recycling paper, plastic and cans.

Though we do not offer an electronics recycling program, information about local electronics recycling can be found here and here.

Donations
The Friends of Fountaindale Library, an organization whose primary purpose is to serve as community advocates for Library services, programs, facilities and needs, accepts donated books and materials to be sold in their biannual book sales. Proceeds from these sales directly support Fountaindale Library programs and materials. Click here for guidelines about donating used books and other materials to the Friends.

If you have materials that don’t fit these guidelines, see our suggestions for other local places that may take your donation.

Little Free Library
In partnership with the Friends of Fountaindale Library and the Bolingbrook Park District, we have placed a Little Free Library near the Bolingbrook Community Garden plots. You can take a book or leave a book while you are visiting the garden or the nearby Hidden Oaks Conservation Area. Books about nature, gardening and cooking are especially welcome.

The little free library has charter number 22902 with the GPS coordinates 41.42297, -088.04165. You can see it on the map at littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap

Programs

Beaver Shredding at the library

Since 2014, we have offered a free, on-site paper shredding event to the public which has already recycled more than 10,000 pounds of paper for our patrons.

Our Go Green Team occasionally offers other programs such as a Costume Exchange, Toy Exchange and Once Upon a Prom. Visit our online events calendar for upcoming events and programs.
